Protecting existing rental housing for long-term affordability
Thank you for your interest in the Canada Rental Protection Fund (CRPF).
The Canadian Housing Acquisition Fund (CHAF) delivers CRPF investments to help eligible community housing organizations acquire and preserve existing rental housing for long-term affordability.
Who is eligible to apply?
To proceed to Stage 1, the organization must currently own and operate an existing portfolio of housing and must have at least three years of housing experience.
The organization must also fall within at least one of the following categories:- Community housing providers, including societies, non-profit housing co-operatives and other organizations that are wholly non-profit in structure, operation and purpose;
- Government housing organizations, including housing entities established by provincial, territorial or local governments, but excluding governments themselves;
- Indigenous housing organizations, including entities established to develop, own or operate housing for Indigenous peoples; or
- First Nations, Inuit or Métis governments or governing bodies.
Getting Started
Organizations interested in participating in the CRPF process begin by completing the Organizational Eligibility Profile. Eligible organizations will then receive access to Stage 1: Applicant Pre-Qualification.
- Register the organization in SM Apply, unless the organization is already registered.
- Complete the Organizational Eligibility Profile, which asks for basic information about the organization, its purpose and structure, and its existing housing portfolio.
- If the organization meets the Eligibility Profile requirements, access to Stage 1: Applicant Pre-Qualification will be provided.
Already registered?
If the organization already has an SM Apply account but the individual user does not yet have access, contact the organization’s SM Apply administrator to be added as a user.
The organization does not need to register again.
What happens after Stage 1?
The Stage 1 application will be reviewed against CHAF-approved eligibility and evaluation criteria to determine whether the organization has the experience, governance, financial capacity and operational capabilities required to participate in the CRPF process.
Organizations that are successfully pre-qualified will gain access to the Acquisition Qualification Portal, where specific acquisition opportunities may be submitted for consideration.
Pre-qualification does not approve any property, acquisition, funding, financing, On-Loan, forgivable loan, purchase agreement, shortlisting or advancement to a later CRPF stage. Each acquisition is assessed separately through later stages.
